How to Protect Your Chicken Coop from Predators and Pests

Keeping chickens is one of life’s simple pleasures. Fresh eggs, happy clucks and the joy of seeing your hens potter around the garden all make it a rewarding hobby. But if there’s one thing that can spoil the fun fast, it’s pests and predators. In the UK, rats, foxes, and mites are among the most common problems that chicken keepers face. Luckily, with a few practical steps, you can protect your birds without spending a fortune.

Start with a Strong and Secure Coop

First things first, the coop needs to be as secure as a bank vault. It’s your chickens’ main line of defence against predators. Rats and foxes are persistent, and if there’s a weak spot, they’ll find it. Use solid timber and make sure the door closes properly. A simple bolt latch can be enough, but double-check it every night.

For the run, make sure you use welded wire mesh rather than chicken wire. Chicken wire keeps birds in but doesn’t keep predators out. Welded wire mesh is tougher and more difficult for foxes to tear through or for rats to squeeze through. Bury it at least a foot into the ground around the perimeter to stop digging. You can also bend the bottom of the mesh outward to make a skirt on the ground, which helps deter burrowers.

Rats Love an Easy Meal

Rats are clever, and they’ll take any opportunity to raid a chicken coop, especially if food is left lying about. One of the best things you can do is clean up any leftover feed before it gets dark. Invest in a treadle feeder if you can. These feeders only open when a chicken steps on them, making it harder for rats to get a free lunch.

Store all feed in metal bins with tight-fitting lids. Plastic can be chewed through surprisingly quickly. Also, keep an eye out for burrows around the coop or droppings in the corners. If you spot any signs of rats, act quickly. Blocking holes with wire wool and cement is a simple DIY fix that works well.

Outsmarting the Fox

Foxes are crafty and strong, so it’s worth doing a regular check around your setup for weak spots. They’re known for being able to lift latches and squeeze through small gaps. If you can get hold of a trail camera, it’s worth setting it up to see if anything is sniffing around when you’re not looking.

At night, lock your chickens safely inside the coop. An automatic coop door can be helpful if you’re not always around to do it yourself. For the garden fence, make sure it is high enough. Foxes can jump pretty well, so aim for at least six feet if you’re using a fence to keep them out of your garden too.

Mites Are Small but Mighty

While not predators, mites are still a real problem. Red mites, in particular, can make your chickens miserable and cause health issues. They often hide in the cracks of wooden coops during the day and come out at night to feed on your hens.

A good scrub of the coop every couple of weeks with hot water and poultry-safe disinfectant can go a long way. If you’ve had problems with mites before, consider dusting the coop and perches with diatomaceous earth. It’s a natural powder that’s safe for chickens but deadly to mites.

Keeping things dry also helps. Mites thrive in damp, dark places, so good ventilation is essential. Avoid letting bedding get too dirty or damp. Using sand in the coop and run can be beneficial as it drains well and makes it more difficult for mites to survive.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

You don’t need a high-tech setup or fancy equipment to keep your flock safe. Most problems can be avoided by staying one step ahead with simple, regular checks. Walk around your coop every few days, especially in the evening, and look for anything that might be out of place. Listen to your chickens too. If they’re acting off or seem agitated, there might be a pest lurking nearby.
