Budgies might be small, but they’re active, intelligent and social birds that need more than just food and water to thrive. A great cage setup goes beyond the basics and can really make a difference to their quality of life.
Cage size does matter
When it comes to cage size, bigger is always better. Budgies need plenty of room to fly around, stretch their wings and explore. A good minimum size for a pair of budgies is around 80cm wide, 50cm deep and 50cm high. That might sound like a lot, but once you add in perches, toys and feeding areas, space can quickly get tight. Always go for a horizontal cage rather than a tall one. Budgies prefer to fly across rather than up and down.
Make sure the bar spacing is no wider than 1.5cm to keep them safe and secure. Wider gaps can lead to accidents, especially with younger or smaller birds.
Think about the layout
Once you’ve chosen the right cage, it’s time to think about how to lay it out. Start with the basics, like perches, feeding bowls, and a few simple toys. Place perches at different heights and angles, but avoid cluttering the space. Budgies enjoy moving around freely, and too many obstacles can cause frustration.
Use natural wood perches instead of the standard plastic ones that often come with cages. They help to keep your budgies’ feet healthy and are far more comfortable. Try to avoid placing perches directly above food or water bowls to keep things clean.
Keep their feeding area away from the more active zones, where toys or swings are located. Budgies like to eat in peace, and separating the two helps keep the cage tidy and stress-free.
Safe and stimulating accessories
Budgies are curious creatures and love to explore. Swings, ladders, ropes and bells can all be great additions to their space. But safety always comes first. Avoid anything with small parts that could be swallowed, as well as items made with sharp edges or containing toxic materials. Stay away from mirrors too. While they might seem like fun, they can confuse your budgies and even cause behavioural issues over time.
Rotate toys every week or so to keep things fresh. Even just changing the position of a favourite swing can give your birds something new to investigate. Simple toys made from untreated wood or paper can be just as entertaining as shop-bought ones.
Keep their minds active
Budgies are smart. They thrive on variety and need regular mental stimulation. Without it, they can become bored or even depressed. Talk to them, play music, and let them watch the world from a safe window view. Some budgies even enjoy watching short nature videos.
If your setup allows, consider letting them out of the cage daily for a safe, free-flight session. Make sure the room is bird-proofed, and always supervise. Free time helps them burn off energy, stay fit and enjoy a change of scene.

Remember that a cage setup isn’t something you do once and never change. As your budgies grow, bond with you and develop their own preferences, you’ll start to notice what they enjoy most. Use that insight to keep adjusting their space and introducing new things.
