BeeMat contains a combination of annual, biennial and perennial species that will flower vigorously over an extended period including:
- Common Knapweed
- Greater Knapweed
- Golden Rod
- Chrysanthemeum mixes
- Anise Hyssop
- Californian Poppy
- Lady Phacelia
- Viper's BuglosBeeMat is a biodegradable pre-seeded growing mat that controls weeds.
It contains mixed flower seeds that have been carefully chosen to provide nectar and pollen for bees especially in the autumn when other flowers have finished. You can lay BeeMat from March until mid August providing conditions remain good and the soil temperature is above 5 deg C.
BeeMat is made up of two layers of tissue paper with flower seeds between them. When laid onto prepared soil and covered with a thin much layer of sand, clean soil or compost BeeMat will suppress weeds and encourage germination of flower seeds in the mat.
Honey Bees and Bumble Bees love the flowers that grow in BeeMat. BeeMat stops weed competition so the plants are strong and produce loads of flowers with nectar and honey that the bees need.
In our trials we have shown up to 90% increase in the number of flowers that establish in BeeMat compared to direct seeded plots and 40% increase in the number of flowers per plant. This explains why more bees visit BeeMat compared to direct seeded plots with the same flowers. We have also looked at how effective different flowers are at attracting bees, showing that where they have a choice they prefer borage and phacelia which is why they are important in our seed mix. We have included other flowers that are attractive to bees to extend the flowering season and to help other insects like ladybirds and hoverflies that feed garden pests such as aphids, and provide valuable habitat for butterflies and birds.
