SOAR MILL FIELD 12.59 Hectares 31 acres

This field seems to have far more history to it than most, There is an old quarry, this we have been informed supplied the stone for Malborough church also in part of the field when the ground is being worked the soil colour shows a dark area under it. Within this is what looks like smelt clinquer and ash, the cove some 300meters away is also called Soar Mill Cove and has a track cut into the old stream wide enough for horse and carts, I wonder whether processed metals or lime were taken down to be shipped out ? There does not seem to be any evidence of a mill although there is a water ditch running to the cove. Soar is a recent name as the cove has always been named Sewer Mill Cove, maybe, as more tourist's came into Devon someone thought it wise to change the name!

The bottom part of this field I have put into permanent setaside, this 3.84 Ha area is alive with grasshoppers in the summer and a huge feeding ground for Cirl's. Along one side, above and below the quarry, I have planted wild bird mix to encourage breeding birds in the scrub around the quarry.

Part field planted with wild bird seed.                                                                    Looking over towards the quarry and farm.
